  • Day of Building for Habitat for Humanity

  • Raise the Roof, the Shoreline Habitat for Humanity connection, will once again be holding their annual day of building on Saturday, June 8, 2019. This year’s event has a twist as Raise the Roof is partnering with Roots 4 Relief, another non-profit organization for the build. The event is called “The Build at Bishop’s.” The event will take place at Bishop’s Orchards in their field at the Little Red Barn located on Route 1 in Guilford, 1355 Boston Post Road, from 9am to 3pm.

In years past, it has been an annual tradition of inviting community members to a local town green for a Saturday of building walls for a Habitat for Humanity house. This year’s build began to take shape when local children’s nonprofit, Roots 4 Relief, reached out to see how they could pitch in to be part of Raise the Roof’s annual day of building. The idea was to align the mission of Roots 4 Relief, ‘Empowering Children to Make a Difference’, and get more families and youth to participate in this annual event. Raise the Roof & Roots 4 Relief are excited to invite the community to join them on Saturday, June 8 for The Build at Bishop’s! Volunteers will build the exterior walls for use in a future Raise the Roof sponsored Habitat house in New Haven, and Roots 4 Relief will host activities that provide opportunities for children and families to experience the Habitat mission.

While participants of the actual wall build are required to be at least 16 years of age, Roots 4 Relief will have other “kid friendly” crafts & activities that will be used in Habitat homes. Examples include birdhouses, quilt patches, builders’ aprons, and window boxes. These items will be gifts for Habitat Partner families.

Participants of the build are asked to register online in advance for one of four 90-minute shifts to help build walls for a house. Previous build experience is not necessary, and build shifts fill quickly. You can also register to help with setting up and cleaning up. Build volunteers and those who wish to help with setup or cleanup must be at least 16 years of age and sign a waiver. Volunteers younger than 18 must have the waiver co-signed by a parent.

Stop by Raise the Roof’s Message Walls on June 8 to write wishes and blessings or add artwork. The walls will be built into the next Raise the Roof sponsored Habitat house with the messages tucked into the heart of the home.
